Getting Old?

Just one more Reserve Duty thought to unpack:

Well, more a story than a thought.

It goes like this…

Over the course of the month, we shared a guard-duty post with soldiers training to become officers. They were in their regular army service, mostly 19 years old or so. We’d stand guard with these young folk, three hours at a time.

One such time, I was talking with the young officer to be, while listening to music he had on his cell phone. (more…)

The Unpacked Bog

It was recently my birthday (I am a proud Aquarius, but we shall discuss that another time)

In honor of my birthday, Chana took me to a traditional Irish music concert by the band Nabac.

The best way I can explain my relationship with Irish music is that I hear it and wish to join in its travels; to ride the sound of the flutes and whistles and the fiddle and pipes to the enchanted places towards where they are headed.

Chana and I spent roughly a month in Ireland, and had a magical time, indeed. The air is piercing and crisp, the people friendly and real. And music is less a performing art than a shared pastime. (more…)

Coffee, Music and a Happy, Sappy Morning

I was in a store this morning buying some coffee. I love coffee, but am on a spouse-imposed quota of two coffee days per week. So whenever I have one of my two coffee-days I get a youthful excitement about me, and just know that good things are bound to happen.

So while waiting at the register for my coffee to be ground, I was already expecting some sort of sappy inspiration to occur. And sure enough, there it was: As I was waiting, the song “With or Without You” by U2 came on the cafe’s radio. I am not the biggest U2 person, but somehow the song hit me in the way that songs do, and a joyful glee came over me.

There are some things in the world that I think were put here so us humans can have it a little easier. It’s like a Divine Whisper saying “I know that being a person is a hard, long haul. So I’m gonna place some sparks of heaven into the world, just so that your body and soul can keep trucking along.” (more…)
